OPPORTUNITIES IN THE CIRCULAR ECONOMY
FROM THE MINUTES 2018
If you had to bury all your trash in your own backyard, would you throw so much away? Jean-Philippe Hermine suggests that the responsibility for a vehicle’s endof- life falls to its manufacturer. To get the ball rolling, auto manufacturer Renault has developed a method that allows 95% of a vehicle's weight to be recycled, so as to give it a second life. The recycled materials add value to the products and are a way for auto manufacturers to generate a new revenue source and boost their cost-effectiveness.
While some could see this as a kind of cannibalization of production within a company, Jean-Philippe points out that it is more accurately a kind of capitalization. He even hypothesizes that repairing vehicles and parts would increase client loyalty, as this environmentally conscious approach would align with consumer values.
SWING YOUR PARTNER ‘ROUND AND ‘ROUND
According to Izabella Teixeira, beginning a transition toward the circular economy requires that governments, the private sector and citizens unite their visions. To this end, she urges companies, organizations and citizens to recognize their political role and their influence. For Izabella, it is the responsibility of citizens to articulate convincing social demands that will lead to the creation of a regulatory framework by governments
A CLOSED CIRCLE
Renault achieved 80% savings of energy and water products by applying the principles of the circular economy to the transformation of usable end-of-life vehicle parts and the design of new vehicles.
LEARN NEW MOVES
Currently, many of those who wish to take part in the circular economy don't know where to get started. Movin'On participants have formulated an idea to create a collaborative platform bringing together eco-design experts, physicists, biologists, political decision-makers and others. As a virtual space devoted to knowledge-sharing and case study, this platform would make it possible to find solutions tailored to each problem. To facilitate contributions by companies and subject experts, governments need to put financial incentives in place to encourage the use of this platform.
