FROM THE MINUTES 2018
“We are in the business of killing people in the automotive industry,” states Roger Lanctot of Strategy Analytics. And he doesn’t just say that. Automobilerelated deaths topped 40,000 in the United States in 2017, Canada had 1,898 fatalities related to automobiles in 2016, while Europe saw 51 deaths per million people that same year. To combat automobile-related deaths, companies are working to develop autonomous vehicles that take human error out of the equation.
THREE CONCERNS
The role of human errors in many automobile-related deaths has been proven over and over again, and statistics show that autonomous cars have a much better track record. However, while most road deaths go under the media radar, each crash implicating an autonomous car is widely publicized. In this context, there are three concerns that must be addressed for autonomous vehicle acceptance:
1. Approval for road testing
2. Certification of the automated driving systems
3. Practical solutions for monitoring automated driving
“The world hasn’t agreed on approval,” says William
Gouse, “we are inventing (standards) just as people
are inventing the technology for autonomous cars.” So,
without a clearly defined process, what is the best path
to autonomous vehicle acceptance?
"Technology is supposed to help us solve this problem of rising fatalities in the world." - Roger Lanctot
WE PUT THE AUTO IN AUTOMOBILE
Here’s how stakeholders can set the basis for vehicle automation acceptance:
GAIN APPROVAL
- Promote collaboration between regulators and innovators
- Establish critical use cases and simulations
- Standardize specific design elements
CERTIFY VEHICLES
- Create trust for certification through partnerships with reputable third-parties
- Establish a self-certification regime with a rigorous set of baseline tests
- Establish the financial and insurance parameters for the ownership and utilization of autonomous vehicles
MONITOR VEHICLES
- Implement vehicle-to-vehicle communication by enabling remote monitoring of the car, driver and passenger
- Install black boxes and dashcams for improved transparency, and a diagnostic to revisit and analyze accidents
- Develop cameras for inside the vehicle to monitor drivers and passengers
